How-To-Encrypt Your Home Folder In Ubuntu
Here is a quick guide on how to encrypt your home folder in Ubuntu. Please follow the directions carefully and don’t jump the gun. So lets get started by installing “ecryptfs-utils“, you can do this by going to the Ubuntu Software Center or by running the following command in an open terminal.
apt-get install ecryptfs-utils
After installing this package you should be able to select “Encrypt Home Folder” and encrypt existing users. Now if you want to encrypt an existing users home folder run the following command(Replacing username with the desired users name.).
sudo ecryptfs-migrate-home -u USERNAME
Now the last step is to have that user login before you restart and choose a passphrase(There will be a window that opens when they login). Note: There will be a temporary folder in their home directory, they can erase it if everything went smoothly.
