Ubuntu Can’t Play Music Or Movies?

This is how to enable playback of MP3 and other formats

So you installed Ubuntu and you just can’t seem to get mp3′s or movies to play properly? This is the quick and easy way to fix not being able to play certain if not most media files. Simply run the following command and then reopen your media file.

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

OPTIONAL (VLC Player)
I like to use VLC Player for my movies, to install VLC Player just run the following command. It should also fix the music/movie playback issue just by installing VLC and its dependencies.

sudo apt-get install vlc
